Can I speak to you before committing to my first session?

Yes! You can book a free Discovery Call today. It’s a friendly and informal chat on the phone with me that lasts around 20 minutes. I call at a time that suits you.

The best way to decide which therapist you want is by talking to them. How you feel will enable you to decide if you want to work with a particular therapist.

I know that I won’t be the right person to help everyone, for various reasons. For example, I might remind you of someone problematic in your life and that might make you feel uncomfortable. It is really important that you feel comfortable with me because counselling is based on trust and a good therapeutic relationship where you feel safe to explore anything.

What can I expect in the discovery call?

The Discovery Call is an opportunity to see if we are a good match.

We will spend about 20 minutes getting to know each other and discussing what has brought you to counselling. During the call, I will explain how I work and answer any questions you have.

You will also have the chance to briefly share your main areas of concern. There isn’t enough time to go into full details but it provides enough space to decide if you feel comfortable moving forward together.

Neurodiversity as difference and autism as pathology

Neurological differences are variations in brain function that deserve respect and accommodation. Just Bee is a neurodiversity affirming practice and I work to help you live well in a neurotypical world. Crucially, I recognise that this approach must exist alongside the reality of disability and suffering and I understand that autism is a condition that can cause high support needs.

My approach is to honour both truths by validating your unique identity and potential while providing clinically sound, compassionate support for challenges with brain management, sensory overwhelm and intense emotions.

I’m here to help you thrive, without judgement.

When can I start?

Soon! The first step is your free Discovery Call. Then you can make your first appointment, so normally you can start within a few days.

I’m confused about all these different types of therapy, how do I know which is the best one?

I understand that there is a huge choice of therapies available and that you might be feeling overwhelmed. There is a good overview of the different types on the BACP website: BACP Types of Therapy

I believe that all these therapies have merit and validity and no single one is superior to the others. I am a person-centred counsellor and I will support you in finding what works best for your individual needs, at this point in time. If I feel that you would be better served by another practitioner, I will let you know and refer you appropriately.

Working with difference – neurodiversity and physical challenges

I like to work with clients who are neurodivergent. I have autism in my family and I am not neurotypical myself. I believe in celebrating diversity and I want to be flexible and sensitive to individual needs, including those around physical disabilities.

I spent some years with a physical problem that left me in constant pain and unable to walk so I have insight into the challenges of living with disability.

I practice the person-centred approach which means that your needs are always my focus. You remain in control in deciding what is best for you. I’m the expert on therapy, you are the expert on you.

I offer a private counselling service at Just Bee Counselling but I am also proud to be a member of the amazing counselling team at Kyra Women’s Project in York.

Through acceptance and support you can build on your unique identity, experience personal growth and start to thrive, despite differences.

What ages do you work with?

I work with individual adults aged 18 and up. I do not provide counselling for children, young people, or couples.

How many sessions can I have?

You can have as few or as many sessions as you wish. The amount of time you decide to spend on counselling will depend on your unique situation and needs.

Will my sessions be confidential?

Our relationship will be based on trust and your sessions will be private. However confidentiality is rarely absolute and there are some situations where I may have to pass on information about you to another professional person, for a legitimate reason. For example:

  • when the law requires it
  • if I think that you have become a danger to yourself or other people
  • when talking to my professional supervisor about my therapeutic work
  • if I needed to refer you to another professional for help

What do you do with the personal information I give you on this website?

How I look after your personal information is described in detail in my Privacy Notice

Does counselling work for everyone?

Counselling is a unique experience and outcomes vary because you bring your own specific goals and history. While no one can guarantee a specific result, research shows high levels of satisfaction among those who do get support. According to the 2023 BACP annual survey, “92% of people who’ve had counselling or psychotherapy agree it’s a good idea to seek counselling or psychotherapy for a problem before it gets out of hand”

I have a busy schedule, how am I going to fit in therapy sessions?

I understand this may be challenging for you so I offer evening appointments. My last session starts at 7pm. Another possibility is telephone or video sessions. We can talk through the options during our initial telephone chat.

Making Payment

I want to make booking appointments and making payment as simple as possible for you, so all you need to do is to click on the link in the invoice I will send you, at least 48 hours before your session. Your appointment is then both confirmed and paid for, and you can arrive without anything more to do.

You must make payment at least 48 hours in advance of your booked session, to confirm that you will be coming to your appointment.

I will send you an invoice by either email or text message so that you can easily make the transfer by clicking on the link.

If you do not make payment 48 hours in advance, I will presume you want to cancel your appointment and I will get in touch to see if you would like to rearrange.

How frequently will my sessions be?

Most often sessions are once a week, but you may prefer fortnightly appointments. I wouldn’t recommend less than once a fortnight.

Can you cure me?

I don’t believe there is anything to cure or that you are broken. Instead, I support your process of self-realisation and help you re-evaluate your sense of self. You are always in control of the direction your therapy takes.

What happens in a counselling session?

A counselling session is your chance to talk about whatever you want and to feel heard. This might be about everyday problems, difficult thoughts or emotions you can’t regulate or you might be feeling that you can’t cope with something in particular… or things in general.

In counselling you will feel safe and supported and have the time to take a focussed look at things and explore your experiences in depth, from your own unique perspective, without judgment or criticism.

You may just want to talk about your problems and be accepted without conditions, or you may wish to think about your values in life as a framework for making more sense of things.

You may want to create some goals that represent positive changes you’d like to make or you might prefer a less structured approach. The choice is always yours.

Will you give me advice?

Person centred counselling is not about giving advice about particular situations. Where appropriate, I may give you information or offer techniques that might be helpful, or point you towards other services that might be of benefit to you.

Mainly I will be listening carefully to you and supporting you to clarify things for yourself, to empower you to come to terms with what is happening and find your own solutions.

How do I know if I need counselling?

If you feel you would like to talk to someone away from your family or friends, counselling can help you work through issues or problems you are experiencing.
