Just Bee Counselling | York

Hello, I’m Lis and I’m here to help adults who are not neurotypical to be heard, to be understood, and to be valued.

If you feel drained by life’s demands, I can offer you a place to just be, where your perspective is finally the one that matters.

Therapy thrives on your relationship with me, your counsellor, so why not book a relaxed and informal 20 minute free chat?  We can talk about your needs and how I can meet them, at a time to suit you. You can ask any questions you like and I can explain how I work. No further commitment.

Why choose person-centred counselling?

Person-centred counselling is a well established approach in counselling that focuses on the individual and can be very effective for a variety of issues. I will listen actively and empathically to your needs so you will be heard and understood. Above all, I will value you as a unique individual, unconditionally and without judgement.

Be heard.  Be understood. Be valued.

Trust – choosing the best counsellor

The most important thing is counselling is trust. Trust is fundamental to the therapeutic relationship. Good therapuetic relationships produce the best results.

One reason to know if you can trust a counsellor is to check they are a member of a recognised professional body. This will mean that they work within an ethical framework and are properly trained and qualified. I am with the BACP and you can check my registration on their website.

I am also on the counselling team at Kyra Women’s Project, an independent charity based in York that support women to make positive changes in their lives. I’ve volunteered there since 2016.

Talking to me is another good way to find out if you would like to work with me and that’s really easy to do because I offer a free discovery call

What are the benefits of a discovery call?

A discovery call is a free 20 minute telephone conversation where you can talk to me in confidence:

  • I can explain what I can offer you
  • you can ask any questions you may have
  • we get a good idea whether or not we can work together
  • I will always be honest with you so if I can’t work with you, I will say so and I may be able to refer you to somebody who might suit you better
  • there is no commitment at this stage but if you decide you can trust me, you can make a booking to start counselling

Be heard.  Be understood. Be valued.

How to book a discovery call

You can book an appointment for a free discovery call online today.

The discovery call online booking page has a calendar showing my availabilty so you can choose a slot that suits you. You’ll then get an email confirmation and I will call you at the time you have chosen.

Alternatively you could fill in the contact form and I’ll be in touch.

Working with difference – neurodiversity and physical challenges

I like to work with clients who are neurodivergent. I have autism in my family and I am not neurotypical myself. I believe in celebrating diversity and I want to be flexible and sensitive to individual needs, including those around physical disabilities.

I spent some years with a physical problem that left me in constant pain and unable to walk so I have insight into the challenges of living with disability.

I practice the person-centred approach which means that your needs are always my focus. You remain in control in deciding what is best for you. I’m the expert on therapy, you are the expert on you.

I offer a private counselling service at Just Bee Counselling but I am also proud to be a member of the amazing counselling team at Kyra Women’s Project in York.

Through acceptance and support you can build on your unique identity, experience personal growth and start to thrive, despite differences.

Neurodiversity as difference and autism as pathology

Neurological differences are variations in brain function that deserve respect and accommodation. Just Bee is a neurodiversity affirming practice and I work to help you live well in a neurotypical world. Crucially, I recognise that this approach must exist alongside the reality of disability and suffering and I understand that autism is a condition that can cause high support needs.

My approach is to honour both truths by validating your unique identity and potential while providing clinically sound, compassionate support for challenges with brain management, sensory overwhelm and intense emotions.

I’m here to help you thrive, without judgement.
